What Is Periodontal Maintenance?

Are you guilty of skimping on your dental hygiene? If so, you’re not alone, but you may want to reconsider your priorities. Did you know that brushing and flossing aren’t just good for your teeth—they’re good for your overall health, too? Believe it or not, maintaining good dental hygiene is linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and even cancer. So why not make brushing and flossing a priority?

Here are a few tips to get you started: -Brush at least twice a day. -Floss once a day. -See your dentist for regular check-ups. -Choose toothpaste and floss that work best for you.

Periodontal maintenance is a treatment prescribed to combat periodontal disease. It involves both scaling and root planing, meaning tartar must be removed from deep between the teeth and gums. Good dental hygiene is important for a healthy lifestyle. You know this already, of course, but it bears repeating. A healthy smile is an important part of looking and feeling your best, and it’s essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. But it’s not just about avoiding cavities and gum disease. Did you know that many diseases are linked to dental hygiene issues? Poor oral health has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and more. That’s why it’s so important to make oral hygiene a priority in your life. Brushing and flossing every day, seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings, and avoiding habits that damage your teeth (such as smoking) are all essential for keeping your smile healthy and your body healthy too. You may be wondering what could happen if you neglect your dental hygiene. Well, there are a few things that can happen. Cavities are the most common issue, and they can lead to a lot of pain and even tooth loss if they’re not addressed. But that’s not the only issue. Gum disease is another common problem that can develop if you don’t take care of your teeth and gums. It’s a serious infection that can lead to tooth loss, gum recession, and even heart disease. So it’s clear that dental hygiene is important for a healthy lifestyle. And it’s not just about having pretty teeth—it’s about protecting your health as well. Periodontal diseases are gum diseases that half of Americans suffer from. These can range from certain visual damage to teeth to bacterial colonization. People suffering from these diseases have the following symptoms generally. Your dentist would recommend periodontal maintenance on regular dental checkups if any of these symptoms are visible. -Red, Tender, and Swollen Gums. -Chewing Pain -Loose Teeth -Bad Breath -Abnormal Gum Pockets

What Happens During Periodontal Maintenance? During general dental checkups, which are recommended twice a year, your doctor removes the plaque shown above your gums, but the plaque can continue growing inside your gum. For the complete removal of that plaque, periodontal treatment must be done to totally eradicate your dental plaque. Periodontal maintenance is required when the disease has caused destruction, and further build-up of plaque and calculus would exacerbate the disease.

Benefits Of Periodontal Treatment: -FRESH BREATH: Brushing your teeth is highly recommended for the maintenance of your dental hygiene. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice daily. Bad breath can make you feel socially awkward, any amount of minutes is not enough until you eradicate the root cause of bad breath. Periodontal treatments help remove plaque, calculus, and bacteria which usually are the main cause of bad breath. -TARTAR REMOVAL: No matter how well you brush your teeth or what flossing techniques you use at home, total removal of plaque and debris is not possible at home. Periodontal treatments, however, can help you remove all kinds of unwanted material stuck to your gums and teeth. -BEAUTIFUL SMILE: Getting periodontal treatment will reward you with a beautiful smile. This helps boost your self-confidence, and social awkwardness is no longer a problem. The treatment will help remove all the staining and plaque from your teeth, giving you a nice set of teeth for a charming smile. -OVERALL HEALTH: Poor dental hygiene is the root cause of many diseases. Bacterial growth in your mouth can influence your overall microbiota, and this, in turn, can lead to certain life-threatening diseases. Periodontal treatments help you eradicate all the risk factors and make you overall healthy.

How Often Do You Need Periodontal Maintenance? Dentists recommend a periodontal maintenance procedure to be done every three to four months. This is time enough for you to get and build up any risk factors which might be the reason for your periodontal diseases.

Periodontal Maintenance Includes The Following Steps -Supragingival cleaning: The hygienist will thoroughly and carefully clean the area above the gum line to remove plaque and calculus. Doing so, they will completely check the general condition of your mouth and what risk factors you might have of getting periodontal disease. -Subgingival cleaning: The hygienist will thoroughly and carefully clean the area below the gum line to remove plaque and calculus. This step helps with the removal of any plaques and debris hidden away beneath your teeth, which are generally not visible and could lead to abnormal bacterial growth. -Root planing: The tooth root is smoothed to eliminate remaining bacteria. The hygienist attempts to remove all the bacterial presence in your oral cavity. This helps your mouth stay healthy and removes the risk of toxin development due to abnormal bacterial growth. -Medication: Following scaling and root planing, an antibiotic may be placed in the gum pockets for comfort and healthy healing in the gum pockets. -X-ray and examination: X-rays reveal the extent of bone and gum recession and also identify areas that may require attention.

How Much Does Periodontal Maintenance Cost? Once you have started the periodontal treatments, your dentist will recommend getting the treatment every three to four months, this will cost a few hundred dollars. This is the average cost for this procedure and can vary depending on your periodontal health condition.
